How to Find the Right Divorce Attorney
Choosing the right family law firm may be one of the most important decisions of your life. In the greater Philadelphia area, there are many great divorce attorneys. Some attorneys work in the family law department within a large firm. Some work in smaller boutique law firms that practice family law only. There are also many lawyers who are sole practitioners. There are advantages and disadvantages to each of these practice structures. Some attorneys charge a fee for their initial consultation while some do not. During the consultations, you should consider the following:
You should be sure to ask questions about the attorney’s experience, whether they are familiar with local judges and hearing officers, their common types of clients, and how long the attorney thinks your case will take to resolve. Be prepared and bring any questions you have about your divorce, child custody, property division, or support. The lawyer you choose should answer your questions to your satisfaction, honestly and in detail.
Take time to weigh your options. There is no need to rush the process. You should always interview at least three attorneys or firms to make sure you have given yourself a chance at finding the best fit for you. Even if you like the first attorney you interview, we highly suggest interviewing more.
Know what you want and do not settle for mediocre service. Going into a divorce, it is crucial to identify what level of support you are looking for in an attorney. Be upfront with the attorney and discuss what you expect legally or emotionally, and make sure the attorney you choose fulfills those needs. If you are looking for a more hands-off approach, communicate that to the attorneys you interview.
Be thorough with your interviews. Be sure to ask as many questions to help understand the attorney’s practice and to make sure they are on the same page. Be on the lookout for red flags like promises that sound too good to be true (they probably are), an impersonal impression from the lawyer, and/or an attorney who rushes the interview.
