Divorce Rates in Pennsylvania: Who, When, and Where?

According to the Department of Health, fewer marriages in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were dissolved by marriage or annulment in 2015 than in the previous year. The report indicates that there were 33,600 divorces state-wide last year.

In 2015, 72,774 couples were married and 33,600 were divorced. In 2014, 74,980 couples were married and 34,060 were divorced. Ten years ago, in 2015, 72,373 couples were married and 35,930 couples were divorced.

August of 2015 had the highest rate of divorce for the year; 12.2% of the year’s divorces occurred that month. January had the lowest with 4.1%.

Delaware County accounted for 827 divorces, Montgomery County for 1,665, Chester County for 1,085, and Philadelphia County for 1,426.

In 2015, parties between the ages of 25 and 29 were most frequently divorced with 22,033 occurrences statewide. The next most frequently divorced age group was those between the ages of 30 and 34 with 13,084 occurrences. The least frequently divorced age group last year was those under the age of 20 (presumably because they are marrying at a far lower rate than the other groups) with 1,292 occurrences. 4,187 divorces occurred between parties aged 45 and 49 making it the next lowest rate of divorce based on age in 2015.
