Marriage and Divorce Statistics
Each year, the Pennsylvania Department of Health releases Marriage and Divorce Statistics for the prior year. In 2019, 32,985 divorces and annulments were recorded. In 2019, there were 68,512 new marriages in Pennsylvania; this is the lowest number of annual marriages in the past eight years.
In 2019 in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, there were 2,527 new marriages and 899 divorces. In Chester County, there were 2,551 marriages and 995 divorces. In Montgomery County, there were 3,869 marriages and 1,516 divorces. In Philadelphia County, there were 10,450 new marriages and 1,627 divorces.
August of 2019 had the highest divorce rate of the year with 8,375 cases or 12.2% of the annual total. January had the lowest with 2,927 cases or 4.3%.
Of the 32,985 divorces in 2019, 6,865 lasted for fewer than 5 years. 7,901 lasted for 5 to 9 years, 5,501 for 10 to 14, and 4,340 from 15-19. 3,118 marriages lasting 20 to 24 years ended in 2019, 2,040 lasting 25 to 29 years, and 2,377 which lasting 30 years or more.
