NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEWLY DIVORCED

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEWLY DIVORCED

The New Year is the perfect time to turn your experience as a newly divorced person into a life lesson and an opportunity to change for the better.

1. LET GO OF DIVORCE AS AN IDENTITY

No matter how traumatic, time consuming or costly your divorce, it’s important to remember that your divorce does not define you.

2. LOVE FEARLESSLY

After a divorce, it can be difficult to learn to love again with a constant fear of disappointment.  However, you cannot let a failed relationship stand in the way of your future happiness.

3. RESPECT YOUR EX

Being patient with your ex and treating them with kindness and respect will be better for both you and your children.  Do your best not to speak ill of your ex in front of your kids.  If you need to vent you should call a friend.

4. TAKE YOURSELF OFF OF THE BACK BURNER

The New Year is an ideal time to focus on your needs and take time for yourself. Also, remember not to be too hard on yourself and don’t be afraid to lean on your support system.

5. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR FINANCES

Educate yourself with regard to your finances and plan for the year to come. Create a budget, analyze retirement accounts, create an emergency fund, and take a look at your investments.

6. PICK YOUR BATTLES

Don’t let yourself get hung up on the small stuff! Learn to take the high road, especially with your ex.  If you feel yourself being dragged into an argument, take a step back and be the bigger person.
